Overview of the Candida Epidemic
There is more misinformation about yeast infections and candida albicans that almost any health topic. Yeast diets or candida diets, along with special herbal formulas for combating yeast and candida infections abound. Yet after 30 years in the nutrition field, we have found very few of these to be effective. Research shows that women, following yeast diets and candida diets, obtain some relief from they symptoms, yet as soon as they go off the restricted diet, their yeast infection and candida symptoms return almost immediately.
You often hear about special foods to avoid and there are many dietary recommendations out there, each claiming to be the ultimate candida diet. Unfortunately there is no ultimate candida diet once the yeast overgrowth has become systemic. Let’s look at us logically; if the standard American diet was the cause of this problem, 90 percent of all Americans would have this problem! They don’t. There are temporary benefits from avoid certain foods as far as reducing the severity of symptoms of candida while proceeding to eliminate the systemic candida problem.
The most common causes of systemic yeast overgrowth include the use and abuse of antibiotics for such things as acne, staph infections and other bacterial problems. These conditions often require prolonged antibiotic use and the longer this goes on the more likely they will cause a candida explosion. Steroid drugs are also a major problem as they also suppress healthy bacteria allowing the candida to explosively multiply. Birth control medications, used for long periods are also a common cause of candida overgrowth. Localized yeast infections can be transmitted sexually from person to person as well. If left unchecked, these local issues have the ability to become systemic over time.
When considering dietary changes there really is no ultimate candida diet. There are no specific foods that help fight candida overgrowth. We have been working with candida suffers for over 26 years and have never seen one single case where these concept have eliminated candida once it has become systemic. Every day we get calls to our research center from people who have been following the so-called “ultimate yeast diet” , sometimes for months or even years and as soon as they go off for even a very short time, their symptoms return with a vengeance. The problem with these diets is that they are very nutrient deficient and can produce dangerous weight loss. This severe weight loss is not only obviously unhealthy but can further weaken the immune system.
